Structural framing timber: uses and selection

Rough-sawn structural framing timber is commonly used for building frames and supporting members where the specified timber size, treatment and structural grade suit the design. Typical applications include wall framing, rafters, joists and other construction framing. H3 treatment is generally associated with suitable above-ground exterior exposure; it should not automatically be treated as a substitute for timber specified for ground contact.

Common applications

  • Wall frames and partitions
  • Rafters and roof framing
  • Joists and supporting construction members
  • Residential and commercial framing projects

Selection considerations

  • Required structural grade and member size
  • Span, spacing, load and connection details
  • Interior, protected or exposed location
  • Treatment and documentation required by the project

Confirm the project specification

Structural members should be selected from approved plans, engineering details or the applicable building specification. Include the required dimensions, lengths, quantities, grade, treatment and delivery location when requesting a quote. For visible finishing work, consider dressed timber; for non-structural general use, see rough-sawn non-load-bearing timber.
